Back to School: Preparing Your School Garden for a New Year of Learning

As the school bells prepare to ring once again, classrooms across the country are coming to life. Bulletin boards are decorated, lesson plans are carefully organized, and teachers are putting the finishing touches on spaces designed to inspire young learners.

But outside, another classroom is also getting ready: the school garden.

Whether you're teaching in a Montessori school, an elementary school, homeschooling, or caring for an outdoor classroom, back-to-school season is the perfect time to prepare both children and gardens for a year filled with discovery.

As a Master Gardener, school garden coordinator and garden coach, I understand most teachers do not have enough help or capacity to prepare both the inside and outside classrooms. Even though teachers image growing magical green beans, peas and yummy lettuce, the actual planting of seeds somehow keeps gettin postponed. Then all of a sudden, it’s Halloween and planting pumpkin seeds sounds like a good idea. Trust me, I’ve been there.

GardenWise Solutions Planting Design and Calendar available NOW.

As a result, I have come up with a way to help all teachers and garden educators ease a little of the overwhelm that comes the beginning of a year. I have created a school garden fall calendar with adaptable designs to fit your school garden. It spells out what seeds and plants will need to be acquired for the garden. The calendar gives weekly tasks starting in August and ending in December. The calendar is structured for easy use year after year. It takes the guesswork out of WHAT to plant, WHEN to plant it and when will it be ready to HARVEST. It has built in times to fertilize and gives useful tips on having a successful fall school garden. It also gives students the opportunity to plant seeds almost every week for the first 6 weeks. The calendar is for Hardiness Zones 8-9 and works in North Texas and the Phoenix area. It’s bright, colorful, user-friendly and you can find the fall calendar digital download here.

Once you have a planting plan in place, other ways to prepare the fall garden include:

  • Inspect irrigation systems and repair leaks.

  • Add compost to improve soil health.

  • Check garden tools and organize storage areas.

  • Create observation stations where students can journal, sketch, and explore nature.

  • Review safety procedures and establish simple garden routines for young learners.

Growing Curious Minds One Garden at a Time

Every classroom begins with a teacher preparing lessons. Every successful school garden begins with someone preparing the soil. Together, they create learning environments where children can ask questions, solve problems, explore nature, and experience the joy of discovery.

Whether a child is reading under a shade tree, harvesting their first carrot, counting butterflies, or planting seeds for the first time, those experiences often become the lessons they remember long after the school year has ended. That's the true power of an outdoor classroom.
